I Dare You to Break the Rules

Aloha from the Vortex

One of the biggest lies we are taught is that safety equals success.

We hear…
Be realistic.”
“Follow the path.”
“Do what’s expected.”
“Don’t rock the boat.”

But here’s the truth no one tells you…Your soul was never designed for autopilot.

And science is actually beginning to prove what mystics, artists, entrepreneurs, visionaries, and rebels have always known…You cannot become fully alive by living someone else’s script.

Every time you ignore your own knowing to fit into expectations, your brain reinforces survival pathways instead of creative ones. You literally train yourself to stay inside the familiar. Inside the approved. Inside the “safe.”

And while safety has its place, living entirely from survival slowly disconnects you from your Magic. Because your authenticity is where your magnetism lives.

Neuroscience shows that when you take aligned risks, try something new, follow curiosity, or make a choice that's coming from your MOJO, instead of merely acceptable, different parts of the brain activate.

Exploratory networks light up, dopamine increases, and inspiration arises. You feel on fire.

And then your brain starts responding as if you are participating in life rather than merely managing it.  And you become a magnet for doors opening and more.

You also strengthen the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain associated with conscious decision-making, vision, identity, and agency. In other words, you become more capable of being the Magician of your own life instead of simply reacting to it.

And maybe most importantly, you interrupt the default mode network, which is basically the brain’s autopilot system. The repetitive loops. The conditioned stories. The same old emotional roads traveled over and over again.

That’s why breaking patterns can feel terrifying at first. And that’s because you are not just changing behavior. You are literally changing wiring.

This is also why creativity requires deviation.

Every visionary looked irrational before they looked brilliant. Every healer, artist, mystic, entrepreneur, and changemaker had a moment where they stopped asking for permission and started listening to themselves.

And yes… people will often project onto you when you do. Because someone rewriting the rules reminds others that they could have done the same.

A fulfilled person does not need to attack someone else for becoming themselves.

The truth is, following all the rules might help you build a socially acceptable life…but it does not guarantee a meaningful one.

You cannot use someone else’s map to find yourself.

At some point, the path becomes less about fitting in and more about remembering who you were before the world told you who to be.

That’s the real work.

And maybe that’s the deeper magic here…

Not recklessness.
Not rebellion for the sake of rebellion.
But the courage to become internally led.

When Jay and I made the decision to move from Boulder to Kauai with three little ones in tow, including a 6-month-old baby, there were those who were authentically excited for us and supportive of our vision… and then there were those who judged us and thought we had completely lost it. 😂

By the way?
Best decision we ever made.

What would your life feel like if you trusted…

Your own nervous system.
Your intuition.
Your own timing.
Your own strange and magical path.

Because life doesn't reward you for being the best copy.

It responds when you become more fully, unapologetically, you.
